sf future lab: phoenix

Where technology becomes culture.

Opportunity

San Francisco leads the world in technology. Its artists and designers need a place to work with it.

The tools shaping the future are built here. Yet the city’s creative and cultural communities have no shared home in which to explore them: to question, adapt and give them meaning.

Vision

A waterfront landmark for making the future together.

Phoenix is proposed as a place where artists, designers, scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs create side by side, and where the public is invited into the process, not only the result.

Impact

What a shared home for culture and technology could give the city.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

Artists, engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs working in the same rooms, on the same problems.

Opportunity for creative talent

Space, tools and visibility for the people and small businesses who give the city its character.

Public engagement

Emerging technology made visible, discussable and open to everyone who walks in.

A stronger creative economy

New work, new ventures and new reasons to create in San Francisco.

Sustainability as a guiding ambition. Low-impact materials, energy and operations would shape every decision: a commitment to pursue, not a certification already achieved.

Story of Phoenix

A city that rises, again and again.

Phoenix takes its name from the oldest symbol San Francisco has, carried on the city’s flag and seal since the nineteenth century.

1850s

Fires swept the young city. From the ashes, it rebuilt itself and took the phoenix as its emblem.

On the seal

The phoenix has stood on San Francisco’s flag and seal ever since.

1906

Earthquake and fire tested that identity again. The city rose once more.

Today

San Francisco shapes the technologies defining the decades ahead.

Founder’s Perspective

Portrait of Ilona Song, founder of Phoenix

“When I returned to the Bay Area, I imagined a place where artists and engineers could create together, where technology becomes culture. Phoenix is my vision for the place I wished existed.”

The vision grew from Ilona’s work as a designer, artist and entrepreneur across fashion, art and technology, and from the conviction that the most meaningful innovation happens when disciplines share a room.
